63. Lillingston's RegimentAle

Firstly, apologies for the lack of posts – combination of busy evenings have kept me away from my keyboard. I have plenty of new beers to talk about however, so you can expect a veritable flurry of reviews in the next week!

This was the second beer sampled over the weekend in sunny Lichfield, in the Kings Head – the city’s oldest pub. Lillingston’s Regiment Ale is brewed especially for the establishment, and takes it’s name from the fact that the famous Staffordshire Regiment was first formed in the pub in 1705 by Col. Luke Lillingston. It served continuously until being disbanded in 2007. Now the sales of the beer are used to raise money for military charities.

The beer itself was served, in my opinion, a little cold for what is quite a dark golden bitter. The beginning is very mild and smooth, but rapidly becomes very bitter, with an almost astringent taste towards the end. By being sold so cold it lacked any complexity in the initial taste, which was a shame.

Still, an interesting name and back story at least.
